Campsite logistics
Bear boxes are mandatory — all food, scented items, and coolers must be in the steel box whenever you're away.
Lower Pines is walkable to everything — Happy Isles, the Mist Trail trailhead, and the Visitor Center are all under 1 mile from your sites.
Sites 052 & 058 are near each other — Lower Pines is a compact campground; your two core sites should be easy to link for a group.
Optional site strategy: Site 048 (Jul 26–27) and 155 (Jul 24–25) give you flexibility to host extra guests or spread out gear on those specific nights.
Summer crowds & timing
Start every hike by 7–8 AM. July is peak season — Mist Trail, Mirror Lake, and Glacier Point parking are packed by 9–10 AM.
Valley Visitor Shuttle is free — use it to skip Valley Road driving and parking. Runs frequently from early morning.
Midday heat can exceed 95°F in late July. Plan to be back at camp or near water by 1–2 PM, then head out again after 4 PM.
Safety & regulations
Check fire restrictions before your trip — campfires are frequently prohibited in Yosemite Valley in dry July conditions.
Merced River swimming: Only at designated areas. The current is deceptively strong near waterfalls.
Altitude on day trips: Tuolumne Meadows (8,600 ft) and Glacier Point (7,200 ft) can cause mild altitude symptoms. Hydrate and take it slow.
